International Student Media Arts Festival

The 5th lnternational Student Media Art Exhibition in Seoul, Korea in 2024 is composed of the Media Art Contest (Onlinesubmission with three sections of Short Film, Animation Art, and New Media Art) and 72-Hour Workshop (Attendance byinvited universities only, Offline on-site co-creation event followed by exhibition and the awards ceremony). internationaexperts and specialists in video art, animation art, and interactive design are invited to judge the Media Art Contest and72- Hour Workshop.

The 5th "Climate Change and Cities" International Student Media Arts Festival concluded successfully at Kookmin University, Korea

with the participation of nearly 100 international universities across 17 countries. ISMA aims to actively promote the participation and harmonious development of international university students. Through creating artwork as the main theme, the event encourages the involvement and cooperation of international students through various forms such as Media Art Contest and 72-Hour Workshop. ISMA has become an important exhibition and competition for exchanging ideas between international universities and disciplines among the fields of film, Janimation, and design.

The 5th ISMA International Student Media Art Festival, jointly initiated by over 30 leading universities worldwide and hosted by Kookmin University, explores the theme of “Climate Change and Cities.” Bringing together young creators from around the globe, the festival utilizes diverse artistic mediums—including film, animation, and interactive media—to investigate the profound impact of climate change on urban development, highlighting the unique role of art and technology in ecological preservation and urban cultural expression. ISMA is not just an international platform for artistic creation and academic exchange; it is also a globally influential cultural event that fosters deeper discussions on sustainable development, environmental crises, and the future of cities, offering innovative artistic perspectives on pressing global issues.

On May 27, the 5th ISMA International Student Media Art Festival opened with great fanfare, attracting distinguished scholars, artists, and young creators from across the world. Professor Pan Yonghwan of Kookmin University delivered the opening speech, warmly congratulating the successful launch of the festival and commending ISMA’s significant role in fostering global youth exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the intersection of art and social responsibility.

That afternoon, attendees viewed a selection of outstanding media works from the past year, offering a diverse range of cultural and artistic perspectives. Participants also toured Kookmin University’s Media and Communication School and visited Korea’s historical architectural sites, exploring the relationship between cultural heritage preservation and sustainable urban development.

From May 28 to 30, international teams engaged in a 72-hour creative workshop, blending traditional Korean culture with modern urban themes to explore climate change’s impact on cities. Through field studies and hands-on artistic creation, students developed innovative multimedia works that reflected both cultural identity and environmental awareness.

On May 31, the Closing Ceremony celebrated award-winning projects and outstanding artistic contributions. Participants reflected on their cross-cultural collaborations and creative journeys, underscoring ISMA’s role in uniting young artists to tackle pressing global issues through media arts.

In his closing remarks, Professor Yang Jianhua, President of the “Beautiful World” Association, emphasized art’s power to drive social transformation, urging young creators to continue using their work to address climate change and sustainability challenges.

The festival concluded with the official announcement that the 7th ISMA International Student Media Art Festival will take place in July 2025, with an open invitation to global universities. Excitement filled the room as participants expressed their eagerness to continue exploring the intersections of art, technology, and sustainability.
